Time: 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM PDT
Event Description:
In celebration of Canada’s 150th, the Abbotsford Arts Council has commissioned the carving of a house post. Citizens are invited to celebrate and learn about the traditional First Nations culture and history. This project is an opportunity to build a sense of national pride by participating in the carving of this house post, joining in the ceremony, or appreciating the house post over the next 150 years. This project is funded by the Abbotsford Foundation and the City of Abbotsford as part of the Canada 150 celebrations. Raphael Silver, Sumas First Nations will be onsite at the Kariton Art Gallery carving the house post throughout the summer months. Silver is also known for other pieces of work in our local community such as the roundabout at McCallum Road depicting the Salmon, the house post arch at the Fraser River Heritage Park, and also has his work at various local schools including Yale Secondary. Local residents are invited to participate in the carving, visit with the artist and learn about the process and history of coastal Salish house post. The general public is invited to our post raising ceremony on Sept 29, 2017 at 11:00 am.
