As one of the Provincial Government's priority communities with a high need for new housing based on the City's projected growth, this conversation will be an opportunity for the Minister of Housing to unpack what the official targets could mean for Abbotsford and the region.
Following the Minister's official remarks, attendees will be able to pose questions during a facilitated fireside chat on everything from local barriers to construction to how Abbotsford can ensure that housing can get built faster and more efficiently while effectively managing growth.
Ravi Kahlon was first elected as a member of the legislative assembly (MLA) for Delta North in May, 2017 and was named British Columbia's Minister of Housing in December, 2022.
He previously served as the Minister of Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation. Prior to that appointment, he was parliamentary secretary for Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development, where he championed the use of mass timber and innovation in B.C's forest sector.
As parliamentary secretary for Sport and Multiculturalism, he helped restore the BC Human Rights Commission and traveled the province to build an anti-racism strategy.
As minister of Housing, his focus is on delivering attainable, affordable housing options for British Columbians.
Ravi's love for sports and athletic competition has also shaped his outlook on life. When he was seven years old, his father introduced him to field hockey. A two-time Olympian, Ravi played field hockey for Team Canada at the 2000 and 2008 Olympics.
