Event Description:
Join Archway Community Services Diversity Education and Job Connections for Immigrants team as they lead us through an informative Lunch N' Learn session.
This 45-minute session will lead employers through the benefits of hiring newcomers, how employing newcomers can contribute to a stronger community, and how to connect with newcomer employment options. Specifics of this workshop will include coverage on issues pertaining to labour shortages in the Lower Mainland and information on Abbotsford's talented pool of skilled Immigrant workers. This session will also provide an overview of the employment services available to new immigrants that prepare them for the job market and is an opportunity for employers to learn about the free services available to help them find new workers. Through implementing these initiatives, job seekers will be able to acquire the skills they need to find meaningful work in a changing economy, providing employers with the strong employees they need.
About the speakers:
Muhi Bakini completed a BA in Political Science and TESL with distinction from the University of the Fraser Valley in 2018. After graduating, he joined the Universal Learning Institute in Coquitlam, British Columbia, teaching English as a Second Language. In 2019, Mr. Bakini was accepted into the Master of Public Policy and Global Affairs (MPPGA) program at UBC and graduated in 2021. Currently, Muhi works as a Diversity Education supervisor with Archway Community Services. He works with a diverse range of clients within and outside the City of Abbotsford, such as businesses, schools, and other service providing agencies, providing education on anti-racism, anti-oppression, and inclusion
Mei Chen is the Program Coordinator of Career Paths for Skilled Immigrants program at Archway Community Services. In this capacity, she assists internationally trained professionals to upgrade their skills to the Canadian job market and to find employment in their areas of expertise. She loves to work with employers and to support them to access the talent pool of skilled immigrants. Prior to this strategic career shift, Mei worked in the corporate world for more than 20 years. She is familiar with how companies operate and make people decisions under various economic conditions. Mei is a graduate of SFU Career Development Practitioner program, and she received a Bachelor's and Master's degree in engineering from Tsinghua University in China.
Darien Johnsen is a University of the Fraser Valley alumni who graduated with a specialization in sociology and Global Development Studies. Her background includes work in multiple social service agencies, including roles surrounding research, Indigenous Education and outreach, journalism, and supportive housing and harm reduction. She is passionate about anti-racism, equality, and education - recognizing the need for families and communities to find fulfilling and supportive work.
