Sep 13 2017 September RBC Lunch & Learn

SOLD OUT!

Topic: Planning for Growth and Compensation:  Proposed tax legislation private companies need to be aware of.

The government wants your comments!

Description:
This  timely one hour lunch and learn will be an illustration of common business structures and compensation strategies for private companies.  The impact the proposed July 18th legislation may have on those structures and compensation plans will be a highlight of the discussion.   But, sprinkled through this case study format, we’ll also talk about balancing compensation planning with the businesses need to fund growth.

The Department of Finance is looking for comments on their proposals until October 2, 2017.  Come, learn in easy to understand language and clear examples how the proposals may affect your businesses so you can make an informed choice about whether or not you’d like to have a say about these changes.

Presenter: Erin Swint, CPA, CA

Erin co-owns Squire and Company and heads Squire and Company’s income tax

planning practice with a focus on providing strategic results to help clients reach their goals - whether the goal is

- the transition of the business to the next generation,
- a tax efficient and effective expansion,
- a simplified corporate structure with the aim to effectively use losses within a corporate group,
- the purchase and sale of a business.

She works closely with businesses and general practitioner accountants around the province (including the North, Fraser Valley, Vancouver Island, Metro Vancouver and the Interior) to make the tax planning and structuring process as easy and painless as possible.

Moving back to the Fraser Valley, after articling at a prestigious mid-size firm in Vancouver where she was exposed to a wide range of clients from the Mom and Pop grocery stores to biotech firms and manufacturers and processors, was a strategic decision to allow her to follow her roots back to the farm sector where she now provides tax advice to farmers and other owner managed businesses.

To that end Erin joined what is now a national firm.  There she became a Canadian Income Tax Specialist focused on the needs of businesses, individuals and trusts by completing Parts I, II and III of the CICA In-Depth Income Tax Course.  Her work at that firm included the active involvement in numerous corporate reorganizations designed to effectively manage income tax exposure of organizations and their key individuals.

Erin is very active in her profession as the founding member of the Fraser Valley Tax Technical Group, a past President of the Fraser Valley Chartered Accountants Association, a member of the Canadian Tax Foundation, a member of the Estate Planning Council of Abbotsford and a frequent webinar leader for Wolters Kluwer’s Expert Edge Series.

When not working, Erin enjoys spending time with her family, swimming and enjoying a glass of red wine with friends.

Sep 28 Proposed Federal Tax Changes - Member Information Forum

How does this affect my business?

In July of this year the Federal Government announced a number of proposed corporate tax policy changes to address what they stated were "loopholes" that the top 1% of income earners were taking advantage of in an unfair manner.  What we now know is that these sweeping changes will have a massive impact on how small businesses operate; specifically, how small businesses pay tax, how they manage capital, and how family members can engage in the business and/or plan for retirement.

It is vital that all incorporated businesses understand the impact of these proposed changes in order that they can make their MP aware of their concerns. The Abbotsford Chamber is hosting a Member Information Forum to review the most significant changes and ask questions of our panelists.

In addition, you will have an opportunity to provide valuable feedback for your Chamber to communicate to our MPs and the Federal Finance Minister.

Citizens are invited to celebrate and learn about the traditional First Nations culture and history. This project is an opportunity to build a sense of national pride by participating in the carving of this house post, joining in the ceremony, or appreciating the house post over the next 150 years. This project is funded by the Abbotsford Foundation and the City of Abbotsford as part of the Canada 150 celebrations. Local residents are invited to participate in the carving, visit with the artist and learn about the process and history of coastal Salish house post.
